A few people have taken shots at EA and John Stagliano because of this project. I think they fail to realize that it’s not about raising funds so much as raising awareness among the people most able to effect a change, and sadly the least educated and willing to do so: the consumers themselves.
I remember John Lennon being pilloried for being such a blowhard anti-war activist and his reply to a reporter who accused him of being naive in the way celebrities often are when they become involved. Lennon said that as long as he was famous, he might as well use the exposure as an advertisement for the cause.
Stagliano can use his status as the most respected and popular director of porn to tell the consumers that the material they love to view is still under attack. I love the idea of telling it like it is. It’s hard to get the viewers riled up about their 1st Amendment or Freedom of Speech rights because it seems so conceptual. This project brings it home: Defend (Y)our Porn.
It’s unfortunate that John and Evil Angel have been targeted. The silver lining is that we at least have a guy defending a case who is the perfect representative for the industry: a real pornographer who can espouse a pro-sex, libertarian view in a way that any reasonable person can understand without the over-the-top sleazy/shocking stereotype that has characterized some of the more colorful recent cases.
